Now it can be told.
It was Democratic operatives, not local thieves, who stole Barbara Bush’s purse last November in a Buenos Aires, Argentina restaurant where the two Bush twins were dining with a raucous group of friends.
And it was another Democratic operative who flunked out of Yale — where he partied with Barbara Bush — and landed at the University of Texas — where he partied with Jenna Bush — who egged the presidential twins into running naked down the hall of their Buenos Aires hotel.
The hotel incident rocked the Secret Service to its very foundations when it was learned that the two agents guarding the twins averted their eyes during the run, lest they see the nakedness and be turned to stone.
“You never, ever avert your eyes. I don’t care what your subject might be doing,” explained a Secret Service official who declined to be identified. “The instant you look away is the moment something terrible could happen.”
It was the blatant averting of the eyes that lead Secret Service brass to order the investigation that uncovered the Democratic dirty tricks. Secret Service officials declined to identify the Democratic operatives.
It is unclear whether the operatives can be prosecuted for the alleged purse theft, since the crime took place in Argentina and Argentine officials showed little concern about the theft.
“Certainly, any prosecution of the nude run is unlikely, since the girls did it of their own free will,” said a White House official.
The publicity surrounding the 25-year-old twins Argentine adventures caused some newspaper columnists to call Jenna and Barbara the Paris Hilton and Britney Spears of politics.
A Democratic spokesman labeled as “silly and lame” Secret Service allegations of Democratic dirty tricks.
“If the Secret Service was doing its job properly, they would see to it that the presidential daughters act like respectable young ladies whenever they travel abroad and represent American values,” said the spokesman, who declined to be identified because he said he got a lot of laughs out of following the antics of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.
